Restore to stock factory firmware and unroot Droid RAZR HD & Maxx HD (XT926)

Droid RAZR HD and RAZR Maxx HD (XT926) has managed to gain root access even before the device was officially released by Verizon Wireless. Restore the phone to stock factory firmware is required when some day we need to exchange, return or repair this device to Verizon.

This procedure can also eliminate root access or unroot your android phone, under some circumstances it can also help you to unbrick Motorola devices. To restore the device to original firmware you can use RSD Lite on Windows computers to flash the original stock firmware.

  1. Download RSD Lite for Windows and install it, you can also use version 6.0, but it’s recommended to use the latest release to avoid issues.
  2. Download the stock firmware/fastboot file in zip that was built especially for the XT926 device. Grab the Jelly Bean firmware if you already running Android 4.1 JB.
  3. You might also need RAZR HD drivers for Windows.

How to unroot, unbrick and restore stock Droid RAZR HD/Maxx HD (XT926)

  1. Extract the firmware in the zip file to your computer, open the extracted folder.
  2. xt926 xml file extract

    XML file

  3. After extracting you will see a xml file “VZW_XT926_4.0.4-7.7.1Q-144_VQW_S3-34-25_CFC.xml” then open the file with notepad. Remove all lines with the word “getvar”, there were two lines that have the word “getvar”, then save.
  4. Open RSD Lite, press the “…” next to the filename. Find and select the xml file that has been edited in step No.3.
  5. xt926 rsd lite flash

    RSD Lite Flash

  6. Since all data saved in phone storage will be wiped, you should backup contacts, sms, calendar and call log. If you already rooted you can also backup installed apps + data using MyBackup or Titanium Backup.
  7. Your phone must be on the AP FastBoot Mode. Turn off your phone first, press and hold the Vol Up + Vol Down + Power button together. You will enter into the Boot Mode Selection Menu, scroll down and select AP Fastboot. After that connect your phone to your computer via USB, our Droid RAZR HD will be recognized as XT926.
  8. ap fastboot mode xt926

    Motorola Bootloader Selection Menu

  9. Once the device is recognized, it’s time to pressing the start button. Flashing process will take about 15-20 minutes, so remain calm.
  10. If the flash is successful, your phone will reboot and revert to the stock firmware.

Thanks, worked great. After I finished the process I simply had to do two software updates. One was the Verizon jelly bean preparation (6MB), the other was the official jelly bean update (250+MB). I am a proud owner of a Droid RAZR Maxx HD running Android 4.1.1 jelly bean.

I had the phone booted into AP Fastboot, then connected the USB cable. RSD Lite recognizes the phone as \Fastboot VANQUISH S\, and it’s reporting the IMEI/ESN/MEID as \N/A\. I’m in the US, and my phone is through Verizon. When I ran RSD Lite and just plugged the phone in while it was booted normally, it was recognized as an XT926. (Still no IMEI reported, though.)

Before I click the start button, I want to confirm that this is correct.

      Verizon Droid RAZR HD/MAXX HD
      Model Number: XT926
      Code Name : Vanquish

Make sure to download the correct firmwire file, extract it and edit the xml to remove getvar line.

If you are still in doubt, it’s better to use the DROID RAZR HD Utility 1.10, the guide can be found here. And then fastboot restore to 0.6.25 (ICS 4.0.4 Official Software)

Why do i keep getting an error message when i go to RSD Lite to click on the file name that has been edited? The error message I am receiving says ” Please check input file. Either XML format is wrong or image files associated with it are missing.” I can’t figure out what I am doing wrong. I deleted all the lines that have “getvar”. Should i delete the spaces as well? Thanks!

Hy, plz check the xml file while editing.
While you delete getvar delete all the lines completely. And check that the xml file format is ok. I mean xml file is running some contains and if the contains are deleted or some issue so u can’t use it via rsd lite. Sorry for my bad english.

    Thanks a bunch mate =]

Your post is the first that lists to delete getvar, which had me stuck for a few hours.

Why is it this has to be deleted and why did previous flashes, the XT912 for instance, not require this?

    Thanks =]

You absolutely MUST change the .xml files and remove the “getvar/var” lines. Otherwise it will fail instantly.

Tried it without touching the .xml file. It immediately failed and gave me an error. Then I removed the getvar/var lines, and it worked seamlessly. My Razr HD is brand new!!! 😀

Hi, I’m from Brazil and would like to change the rom from my device by American original. Because Brazil has a lot of rom application useless and is very slow, and take to receive updates. If I do this, it will stay with the standard of American manufactures?

the original problem on my xt926 was it would power cycle. It would start with the Moto logo, then Droid, then start the “Wheel” design and freeze. Then it would go black a few seconds and start with Moto logo. I was hoping this would fix it, but now RSD Lite is trying to reboot and its doing the same thing. Anyone have any ideas?

I’ve followed the instructions to the T but when I run RSD Lite v6.1.5 Multi-Flash/Multi-Flex Tool the 1st line shows:
    Model: Fastboot VANQUISH S
    Port No: 1
    Port Type: USB
    Status: Failed flashing process – 1/27 flash sbl1 “sbl2.mbn”
    Result: USB FAIL

I’ve removed the 2 “getvar” lines so not sure what to try next. The reason I need this is because of the automatic update my phone did to KitKat and now my Wi-Fi hot stop won’t work so I can’t use my printer, scanner and must run the USB Tether intead of the WiFi Hotspot which is very annoying because Phone MUST stay connected to puter. This is my only way of accessing the internet so can someone please help me with suggestions on how to get the RSD program to run without failing??!!

I know this is an older thread but I have a RAZR HD that is unrooted and received the KitKat update a few weeks back. Today failure messages started popping up left and right and then the phone tried to reboot on its own and has been stuck on the red M screen since. I can get to the boot menu, if I go to restore I get Andy being worked on but cannot get to the restore option menu from there. I cannot power off the device. I can get into the fast boot screen but it says device is Locked. I have downloaded everything I need to in order to flash but RSD Lite fails every time and I have removed the “getvar” line in the xml file. RSD does not recognize my phone, because it is frozen I cannot activate USB debugging. The status message I get in RSD reads:
Failed flashing process. 2/20 flash partition “gpt.bin” -> Phone returned FAIL.

    Any help?!! Thanks!

If some one else falls here just like me, I had a problem with my XT925 too, and figured out that my only choice was to flash it up.
When I got the infamous message “sistem_signature” failed, the solution was just download the last RSD I found (which in my case was 6.1.6).

Also, I very nice thing I discover was a way to don’t delete USER DATA! My phone stucks, and I did’t have any backup of my contacts (that is a lot of numbers) nor my files (photos, movies).
Before you load the .xml in the RSD, just remove the line in the xml written: ” “. This line says to erase the user’s data partition, and in most cases, we don’t want that.
So yeah, you can flash your phone without lose any contacts or photos!
Now go, and spread the word!
