Root Xperia ZL with unlocked bootloader by using DooMLoRD’s modified kernel

After successfully gained root access on Xperia Z not long ago, now Xperia ZL users also can gain root privileges, still from the same developer from xda – DooMLoRD, we should donate to him for a great works. The root method is basically the just like before by flashing Chainfire’s CF-Root-Auto modified kernel, so it can be applied to the Sony Xperia ZL (tested on C6503, other models should work too). Since we need to flash a custom/modified kernel to this phone, it means our device’s bootloader must be unlocked. Luckily Sony has officially supported this phone for unlocking.

When Z has gained root, I believe that this phone will also get it soon, since basically both Android phones have the same hardware specs such as 1.5 GHz Quad-core Krait CPU, 2 GB of RAM, 5 inch display and 13 MP camera. Striking differences between the two phones is ZL has a more compact design and no dust and waterproof protection.

Update !! One-click root method for Xperia ZL, read the guides here.

How to root Xperia ZL (unlocked bootloaders)
Here is a pre-requisite that you must satisfy to make the rooting process went smoothly without any error.

  • An unlocked bootloader devices (tested on C6503 with Android 4.1.2 build number 10.1.A.1.350 Jelly Bean, but may work on another variant).
  • Stock kernel and modified kernel developed by DooMLoRD, grab it here.
  • Get fastboot package, and then extract it. This file is required to run the fastboot command in CMD.
  • Set up ZL Xperia device drivers, we can get it by installing PC Companion software.

As I said earlier, the method used to obtain root, same as the Xperia Z method, only the kernel files used for flashing is different. Guidelines for flashing the kernel to get root on Xperia ZL can be seen in this guide from Step 1-7 are all the same, but use the kernel file from the link above.
