Root Xperia Ion (LT28at/LT28i) by using Bin4ry root script for ICS and Jelly Bean

After updating to ICS via Sony Update Service or Flashtool, you likely will get rid of root access on Xperia Ion. In some versions of the firmware such as 6.1.C.1.105/.107 for at&t (LT28at), without root access you will lose the ability to tethering, and the phone will loaded with lots of carrier bloatware apps.

Some users even recommend to stay on official leak ICS firmware 6.1.E.0.233 Chinese version (LT28h), due to the fact that this firmware come with no carrier bloatware, more smooth and tethering features works well without root access. To root Xperia Ion while running ICS firmware, you can use the new root script developed by Bin4ry from xda.

Update!! For those who have trouble gaining root on the latest firmware, try ERoot exploit, just give it a shot, reportedly working on 6.1.E.3.7 Build.

  • Before rooting your device, make sure the phone is running Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.4) firmware. Especially for those of you who running at&t firmware (6.1.C.1.105), which doesn’t include Backup & Restore app, you have to download the apps here, extract it and install the Backup-Backup-Restore.apk and wizard.apk inside it.
  • Enable USB debugging in Settings > Developers options.
  • Then download the attached root script on this page, select the latest version.
  • Extract zip using 7-zip or WinRAR on your computer.
  • xperia ion ics jb root script

    BiN4ry Root Script

  • Run the script by double-clicking RunMe.bat.
  • On the Device Type select Normal by typing “1” (without quote), then follow the instructions.
  • Done. You should see Superuser app installed.

Very well done! Simple, easy and fast.

    Thanks for sharing this!!

It took me few minutes to get my Xperia ION rooted.

This gives me the ability to install the setcpu apps and now my battery is not draining (4x to 5x time’s improvement) as fast as used to be.

    Thanks again!

Hey, For some reason I cant seem to root my phone using any method. I am running ICS 4.0.4 build 6.1.E.3.7 oh my Sony Xperia Ion Lt28i. I have even tried the ERoot method and it does not work. The problem is – When using Flashtool, the Backup&Restore comes up and when i choose Restore on the phone, it loads for a quick second and says “Restore completed” on the phone but Flashtool gets stuck on the “You have 60 seconds to restore your device” part. I am not able to understand what is going wrong.

What error messages do you get ?
Don’t forget to install Restore and backup app before running Bin4ry script.

Thank you for fixing the link. I tried to root my Xperia Ion running 4.0.4. Everything appeared to work flawlessly but superuser was not installed on my phone. The only thing that didn’t appear to work during script execution was “mkdir: can’t create directory ‘/system/bin/.ext’ : file exists” I have “USB debugging” on and “Unknown sources” on. I have the Sony Companion and Update Service also installed on my computer. The usb cable I am using is one that I always use to charge my phone with no problem. Nothing in the hardware manager shows to have driver issues. Now my phone seems laggy. Any ideas of what went wrong?

Try to backup everything and then factory reset (I know it sucks).
Re run the Bin4ry root script.

I did factory reset and re ran the Bin4ry root script. Same exact results. Everything appears to work right. The only thing that appears to not be working right is “mkdir: can’t create directory ‘/system/bin/.ext’ : file exists”. Superuser is still not installed on my phone. Any ideas?

It was working without any problems on my LT28h, if I was in your position, I would think about flashing stock firmware using Flashtool prior to root.
But safest option is ask your problem on Bin4ry’s thread.

Will it unlock the SIM as well or only the boot loader. I guess they have dissabled to root the Xperia LT28AT version which was specific to AT&T. Suggest me if I should try this.
