Although it’s late, an official Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Verizon HTC One M8 finally released. If you are still running the Verizon official firmware, then you will soon get an update notification right on the phone. If your device has been rooted with custom recovery, it is not advisable to install the official update directly from OTA, you may be able to download it, but it won’t install, since it has found a lot of changes on your device.
The Lollipop official update for the Verizon HTC One M8 is a major upgrade from previous Android version but still on Sense 6. It offers a new material design feature which has complex animations and amazing 3D UI. The notification panel has adopted the Lollipop design, but the navigation bar icon seems unchanged. In addition to significant UI improvements, the update also enables Band 4 roaming and better 3-way calling feature.
If you are still need root badly on the Verizon HTC One M8, then don’t update it through OTA, since HTC has been applying security patches on Android 5.0 which break a root utility like Weak Sauce or S-OFF and bootloader unlock tool called SunShine. Previously, we had to wait about two months until Weak Sauce 2 released and managed to provide root to the official Android 4.4.4 Kitkat.
In case you wish to experience Lollipop on VZW HTC M8 and rooted, you can flash a custom ROM or wait until the stock rooted ROM Lollipop released. However, you first need to unlock the bootloader or gain S-OFF while on the official KitKat, since the SunShine 3.0 isn’t compatible with Lollipop OS on Verizon branded HTC smartphone.
This is bad news, because only Verizon devices are not supported, while the some others M8 variants are fully supported. Verizon seems more advanced in terms of locking its products.
