The Android 5.0 Lollipop was revealed in the middle of this year, after that the complete source code was accessible on November 3, 2014. And now Google also published the Android Lollipop Factory Images for Nexus devices (Nexus 5, 7, 9, 10, etc. ), which contains the binary images files including the Google-owned applications.
Google Apps or also called as gapps are the proprietary Google-branded applications, and these apps are required if you wish to experience Google’s services such as Google Play Store, especially if you are planning to run a custom ROM.
Due to licensing restrictions, these apps cannot come pre-installed with CyanogenMod or any AOSP-based ROMs, we have to flash it separately. For simplicity purpose and to prevent issues during installation, the Android 5.0 Lollipop or CM12 gapps are packed into flashable format (zip), we can flash it with any custom recovery like CWM or TWRP, usually it flashed right after we flash an Android 5.0 based custom ROM.
Android 5.0 Lollipop / CM12 Gapps
Here is the signed Android 5.0 gapps that can be used with CM12 or any AOSP (Lollipop) based custom ROMs. Flash it to older version of Android might only bring more troubles to you.
