The latest and greatest version of Android (5.0 / Lollipop) has been officially released by Google, it delivers substantial improvements from the previous version. The new User Interface (UI) with material design is the most noticeable changes in this version. The new Android experience makes some users desire to run this OS on their devices, it also makes developers vying to build a custom ROM based on Android 5.0 Lollipop as done by CyanogenMod Team with its CM12 ROM.
An older devices like the Verizon Galaxy S III (SCH-I535) most likely won’t get an official Lollipop update from Samsung, one logical reason is the device was released more than two years ago, Samsung will prioritize OS updates for modern devices. The Android 4.4.2 update (NE1) which rolled out in mid-2014 could be the last update for this smartphone.
However, there is still hope for those who want to run the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Verizon Galaxy S3, although it’s not the official way. An XDA senior member – mtb3000gt, has built a custom ROM (Liquidsmooth), it’s an aftermarket firmware based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).
The Liquidsmooth Lollipop ROM might not sound familiar to you, unlike well-known CyanogenMod / CM12. However, we believe that the performance of the ROM is not way too different since the both ROM based on AOSP.
Although this ROM still on beta stage while this post published, most basic functions could work normally. Here we provide the summary:
- Download the Liquidsmooth ROM based on Android 5.0 (Lollipop) for VZW Galaxy S3 in zip format.
- Grab the Google Apps and flashable SuperSU, both in zip format.
- Copy all zip files into phone storage.
- Boot into custom recovery flash ROM -> Google Apps -> SuperSU.
- Then give it a reboot, it might take some time for first boot.
