HTC EVO 4G LTE is a legendary smartphone, just like another EVO series, it released exclusively on the Sprint network, and the device was quite popular at that time. It was released about two years ago with Android 4.0 ICS, and the software version 3.17.651.9 is the last official update received by phone in October 2014.
However, the last official update still loaded with outdated Android 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean), so most likely there will be no KitKat update, let alone the official Android 5.0 Lollipop update.
The only hope to experience the most recent version of the Android OS is to run a custom AOSP based custom ROM like CyanogenMod. Fortunately, this device has a fairly active community, so that we can find an early build of CM12 for HTC EVO 4G LTE (jewel). This Android 5.0 ROM compiled by an XDA member – ZX64, based on CM12 source by CyanogenMod Team.
In order to run this CM12 ROM, your Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE should meet the following requirements:
- S-OFF with Hboot v2.10
- 4.13.651.4 Firmware Update
- Running TWRP recovery 184.108.40.206b , 2.8.1.x or 220.127.116.11
You need to remember that this is an early build ROM, is not recommended for daily use, as you could get several troubles. You may have to wait a while until the ROM turn out to be stable enough, or until the CM12 nightly appear.
In case you desperately want to flash it just for fun, we summarize the following steps for you:
- Boot into recovery and wipe.
- Install the CM12 ROM then reboot.
- Once boots up, reboot to recovery again.
- Now install Android 5.0 Google apps.
- Wipe dalvik, cache and reboot.
- Voila! sweet Lollipop should running on EVO 4G LTE now.
It’s unrooted, you need to manually root it, and if you have any issues and wish to follow the progress, just head to the developer thread on xda (source link).
