How to unroot and restore Motorola Atrix HD (MB886) to stock original firmware

After purchasing Motorola AHD MB886 for a few weeks, we’re sure you’ve done a lot of things on your phone although it still locked bootloader, such as installing many applications, get root, uninstall the stock apps and change some settings to match with you.

Maybe, someday you discover that after making some changes on your phone, cause it to have poor performance and you wish to restore it to its original condition (and unroot it) just like when you buy it from the store. You should know if you are planning for getting future OTA updates, you also need to reinstate your phone to stock, or the OTA update will be failed / denied, when there are system apps that are missing or have been modified.

However for those who have installed a custom ROM, a factory reset won’t be enough to restore Atrix HD to stock firmware, you have to flash stock official fastboot files/stock firmware to your cell phone using RSD Lite application for Windows PC. Thanks to dev from xda with username Pzyduck and the Firmware Team who build Atrix HD (MB886 – Qinara) stock firmware (Android 4.0) which available in two versions for AT&T (US) and Bell (Canada), really don’t flash the AT&T firmware on Bell’s phone and vice versa, as it will likely make your gadget brick. If you still locked bootloader you’re safe to flash the firmware since it has been signed by Motorola.

Follow these guidelines to restore your Motorola Atrix HD to stock firmware (Android 4.0.4), this time we will restore to 77.12.22 (ICS) firmware. Don’t forget to backup all your data:

  1. Get RSD Lite 6.14 (recommended version) for Windows only.
  2. Get the stock firmware file, make sure you pick the latest ICS firmware file here (7.7.1Q-144_MB886_MR1-22_SIGNED_CFC.xml.zip) for AT&T.
  3. After successfully downloaded, extract the zip file. And edit the 7.7.1Q-144_MB886_MR1-22_SIGNED_CFC.xml file using notepad, and then remove 2 lines with getvar.
  4. step operation=”getvar” var=”max-download-size”
  5. Open RSD Lite, open the XML file that you have edited before.
  6. stock atrix hd rsd lite flash

  7. Turn off your phone, and then enter the Boot Mode Selection Menu by press and hold the following keys together (Volume Up+Volume Down+Power). Using vol down, scroll to AP Fastboot menu, and then vol up to select it.
  8. ap fastboot mode mb886

    Motorola Bootloader Selection Menu

  9. Connect Atrix HD to PC via USB, your phone will be recognized by RSD Lite as MB886.
  10. Now it’s time to hit the Start button, and please wait for about 10-25 minutes.
  11. Once the flash process done, your device will reboot. Your Motorola Atrix HD (MB886) should restore to stock and unroot now.

Extract the firmware first, and edit *.xml then remove any line with getvar. (refer to step 3).

That’s where I’m confused. People are saying delete lines with getvar. I need better explanation.

well this guide above works perfect,if you are having a problem try updating your driver..,rds failing? mine was too…on system img. try updating to rds 6.1.4 google it.dont forget to extract the zip file you downloaded from here http://sbf.droid-developers.org/dinara/list.php
and edit the xml save changes. there is two lines identical….

      step operation=”getvar” var=”max-download-size” delete them…noting else

And when I put the device in Ap fastboot RDS lite don’t see my mb886???

    • ms!foxbatDecember 25, 2012 at 10:19 PMReply

I have one of the same issues as Cedtonic; RSD Lite 6.0 and 6.1.4 does not see my phone, MB886. I am using a Dell Studio Laptop. I have tried it through a hub and through 2 of the 3 USB ports. I would try the 3rd but it doubles as an eSATA port and I have my blueray burner connected. 6.1.4 does not have DeviceID mode so I tried going to MTK and switching to first come first serve without any change. Any thoughts? Thank you.

Hey there, I decided to try this on my AT&T Atrix HD, but I also get the same error as Hector, I even removed the two lines with getvar, but it still does not work, gives me this error: Failed flashing process. 1/23 flash partition “gpt_main0.bin” -> Phone returned FAIL

    I’d appreciate any help, thanks.

    Hey,
That’s weird, I’ve done this on my friend’s AHD and it worked. It has 77.12.22 (Android 4.0.4) firmware version, and using this stock firmware (7.7.1Q-144_MB886_MR1-22_SIGNED_CFC.xml.zip) with RSD Lite.

Someone has brought this issue to the xda forums, make sure you keep track of that thread to get advice from an expert.

I have installed the 4.1.1 update and I am hunappy with it. HDMI overscan mode is gone as well as USB mass storage. Will this method work to bring back my AT&T Atrix HD to 4.0.4 ? I have read on xdv delvelopers that once you go to 4.1.1 tehre is no way to downgrade. Note my phone was never rooted.
    Thanks

    • DuncanDecember 31, 2012 at 6:23 AMReply

^ I’d like to know this, as well. Have you had any luck downgrading?

  8. Uber KrautJanuary 2, 2013 at 7:28 AMReply

    I also have this issue.

I just got my second Atrix HD yesterday in the mail because my first one the LCD cracked on it after 3 weeks. At any rate….I had absolutely no trouble rooting the first time around. OTA update came through no problems what so ever. Didn’t have to unfreeze any bloatware or use OTA RootKeeper.

Here’s where it gets stupid. New phone came and I did the OTA update before rooting without even thinking about it. Tried to revert back to stock rom. Now I keep gettin fastboot screen. RSD won’t flash back. I can’t even do factory reset. Still get the fasboot screen.

Any help? Do I need to just send it back and tell them it didn’t work out of the box?

    Thanks in advance!

Hi there: I wanted to share with you that I followed the procedure here with the additional comments from timistim in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2057078 and it worked great.
However, I went through this with the intention to clear a “Phone Subsidy locked” message I got after entering too many times (by mistake) a wrong unlock code and that prevents me from entering the correct code I got from Motorola now.
After restoring the firmware with this procedure, I turned on the phone with the expectation that it will present me with the screen to enter the unlock code… but not. The odious “Phone Subsidy locked…” message is still there.
I tried many things now but nothing can defeat this lock, apparently.
Does anybody there know or has an idea about how I could beat this obstacle?
In all cases, thanks a lot everybody for reading this.

Thanks so much! I was stuck in a boot loop from a bad ROM flash and using fastboot commands was not working (bad kernel I think), this tool worked like a charm!

  15. rogerntpJanuary 8, 2014 at 2:52 PMReply

RSDLite: flash process failed. 1/23 flash partion \ \ gpt_main0.bin – Phone returned FAIL.
Atrix HD: downgraded version of security
    gpt_main version update failed
    preflash validation not to GPT.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank you!!!
I purchased MB886 phone few week ago, through merchant on Amazon, and quickly discovered that it came from China with operating program that blocked access to everything Google related. I could not search on Google, get G mail or access Google store. Most other web pages were accessible but without app-store this phone was only marginally useful. Merchant that sold the phone offered to reimburse me only half the money because, as he put it, the phone is still partly useful. In my frustration I searched the web for info. to unblock phone’s Google access and I found this page. Following your instructions carefully I successfully updated operating system and restored phone’s full capabilities. You save me the price of purchase of new phone. Thanks again.
